The British-based Amplification Recording and Cambridge company was established in 1976 by Chris Evans and John Dawson. The duo was enrolled at Cambridge University when they set out to develop their first home amplifier.

Over the years, the name had changed several times before officially becoming known by the acronym of ARCAM during the 1980s. Since its founding back in 1976, the company has played an important role in the expansion of the high-fidelity industry. Although they were first known for their low distortion amplifiers during the late 70s and into the 80s, they eventually expanded their product line to include hi-fi CD players during the mid-to-late 90s. As home audio began moving away from componentized systems to all-in-one units, ARCAM was one of the first to develop its own all-in-one home cinema systems.

Today, the company still focuses on providing the highest quality amplifiers and home audio equipment to ensure the accurate reproduction of music and movie audio.
